Sigtuna

Once upon a time …

In 970, King Erik the Victorious looked out at the surroundings and pointed out the location where Sigtuna town would be built – a new era in the Swedish history was about to begin… Today we can go back in time and visit medieval churches, ruins, castles and rune stones from the Viking Era. This is where Sweden begins.  Sigtuna is located between Uppsala and Stockholm. During the summer boats depart from Uppsala and Stockholm to Sigtuna daily.

The county of Sigtuna has a rich cultural life to offer. Here there is a concentration of rune carvings, both in rock and other materials.

Sigtuna has three museums. Lundströmska gården, Sigtuna Rådhus (Europe's smallest city hall) and Sigtuna Museum. In the town there are also narrow, cosy alleys and yards behind the 18th and 19th century facades along the street of Stora Gatan. There are also some fine art galleries here. Examples of those are Strandgalleriet, Gallleriet Trekanten and Sigtuna Kulturgård.

Other things that are suitable both for children and grown-ups are bus-rides behind the scenes of Arlanda airport and glassblowing at Steninge manorhouse. Klockbacken is a beautiful picnic place. Here are also exciting events for young and old. Skokloster Castle and Steninge manorhouse with its beautiful gardens are both close by.
